TPACK and SAMR Models in Education

                                                             TPACK MODEL

from MacGraw-Hill Canada

        TPACK Model is the combination of three knowledge areas, these areas are Pedagogical, Technological and Content knowledge. As you can understand the T refers to technology, P pedagogy, C content and K refers to the knowledge the combination of these areas give us the TPACK.

Content is the knowledge of what will be taught or which field you teach. It is the subject matter of the teaching. Language arts, science, math, geometry, music, history and literature are the contents. For my case my content is language arts and it is English teaching.

Pedagogy consists of the knowledge of how, how will you teach ? Will you use group or individual works, debates, direct or indirect teaching techniques, the decisions that you made about your way to teach depends on your pedagogical knowledge. This knowledge also includes the identifying  your students, understanding their needs, wants, motivation sources and more so with your pedagogical knowledge you can choose the most appropriate way to teach your subject.

Technology includes the technological tools that you will use in your field such as smart-boards, laptops or computers, tablets, videos, clips, simulations, vodcasts, podcasts, Google Drive, Classroom, Edmodo, Padlet, Quizlet and so on. You can use all the technological tools and advancements which are appropriate to be used in education. As we talked previously technology helps you in many aspects and if you know how to use technology in an effective way it can be the best partner for you at the teaching process. Let's look at the combination of these areas;

Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK); It is the ability of integrating technology and pedagogy. Knowing how to use technology in terms of pedagogy, combining two of them consonantly.

Technological Content Knowledge (TCK); Knowledge of choosing the most appropriate technological tool(s) based on the learning and teaching activities.

Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK); It is knowing how to teach the content in the best way. The process of teaching the content by depending on your pedagogical knowledge. Finally the combination of these TPK, TCK and PCK presents you the TPACK model.

     SAMR MODEL

     It is the model that developed by the Dr Ruben Puentedura. SAMR is the acronym of the substitution, augmentation, modification and redefinition, combination of these four elements gives us this model. Using all of these elements in accordance with each other is the main point of this model.

 Substitution is presenting the content differently, it can be thought as changing the traditional tools with the new tools such as technological ones for example instead of using worksheets and hand copies google docs or word can be used. As an another example students might be wanted to type a report instead of writing this report. In this situation new technique replaces the old one but the task or activity still same it doesn't  change only the tools that you use change.

Augmentation refers to the enrichment of the presentation. On the contrary of substitution there is improvement of functionality as it is in the substitution still there is a same task but the amount of functionality is more.

Modification is the redesign of the task. The main goal is changing the learning process from individualism to the socialism. Instead of involving the learning process as being alone working with groups are more preferable.

Redefinition means the allowing the creation and design of the new tasks. Podcasts, vodcasts, blogs, wikis, videos, presentations and animations created by students can be given as examples and here is a real example from the real life, it is me i am writing this blog for my course named as material design and i am the one of these students who involve the redefinition process ;)
